Oxford’s speedway and greyhound racing track closed down 15 years ago, but now it is on its way back.
The Oxford Stadium has recently had works completed to restore it to an operational condition, and speedway is set to return to the venue later this year.
Earlier this week, ITV News’ South East regional programme ran a story on the track.
Former speedway world champion and team manager of the Oxford Cheetahs, Jason Crump, said to ITV, “I think it’s really important, because obviously in recent times we’ve lost Reading, Oxford’s been away for many years, Swindon’s having trouble at the moment.” He added, “I’m really happy for the fans of Oxford that the speedway is back.”

Shown in the ITV News feature is the extent of the restoration work that has gone on. Previously, the track has been in a hopeless state, yet in eight months the work done has been sufficient to allow speedway bikes to return to the track.
The news has also been welcomed by some of the great and good from other motorcycle sports, with TT legend John McGuinness labelling it “Great news,” on Twitter.
The anticipated return of speedway to the Oxford Stadium will happen on 13 April 2022, when the Scunthorpe Scorpions arrive for the first Championship meeting of the season.
