An emotional Michael Dunlop has made history today, by becoming the most successful Isle of Man TT racer of all time.
Equalling and even surpassing his late uncle’s record has been on the cards since Dunlop first turned a wheel in this year’s event, showing his speed in qualifying and equalling the record in the first Supersport Race of TT 2024. The Ballymoney rider only missed out on the chance to equal the record thanks to a visor issue after a pitstop in the Superbike Race, forcing him to stop on Bray Hill to rectify the issue.
Speaking after the race, a clearly emotional Dunlop was all smiles, as he shook the hands of Peter Hickman and Dominic Herbertson who finished 2nd and 3rd in the Supertwin Race respectively.
Dunlop said “It’s tough, you know, we should have been 28 [wins] today … I felt good, the boys said ‘these boys are coming’ so I thought I better go! It’s a nice place to be. I’ll never be modelled against Joey. My record, someone will get it one day ... But I’ve always wanted this.”
Speaking about the race and his rival's performance, second-place man Peter Hickman said “The little Swan Yamaha is going really well, we don’t quite have enough straight-line speed but handling-wise it’s so, so good.” Hickman went on to congratulate Dunlop saying, “It's great to be in the race where Michael gets his 27th win. What an unbelievable achievement”.
